Job Title: Animal Care Technician

Primary Function:
To provide consistently compassionate, attentive and humane care of the animals. To clean and maintain a healthy, sanitary environment for the animals and the public. To help prepare animals for adoption by helping to socialize, train, and keep them medically healthy. To constantly help reduce the stress of shelter-life for the animals by providing plenty of exercise, enrichment, and quiet time. To meet and greet and educate customers and help them in the selection of a pet.

Duties and responsibilities: % of Time

  • To clean and sanitize all areas, including but not limited to, cages and kennels, floors, walls, crates, air vents, litter pans, filters, laundry, dishes, the kitchen, the yards, storage areas, windows, etc.
  • To conduct spot cleaning of animal and public areas throughout the day as needed
  • To feed, medicate and observe animals for illness or infestations
  • To inform the Director of Operations, Shelter Manager or Intake Manager of changes in any animal’s health or behavior at time noticed
  • To work with the animals to exercise, help socialize and train, per instructions
  • To assist the public with the selection of a companion animal, maintaining a friendly demeanor and providing excellent customer service at all times
  • To assist in the training of volunteers so that they meet our needs and we meet theirs
  • To work courteously and cooperatively with volunteers and all shelter personnel to achieve an efficient, healthy, safe and pleasant environment for the animals and the public
  • To assure that animals have proper identification displayed
  • To maintain the exercise logs at all times
  • To communicate maintenance needs to the Director of Operations
  • To maintain accurate records on all white boards and in Pet Point
  • To familiarize yourself with the Pet Helpers website and to be able to speak effectively to the principals, purposes and objectives of the organization
  • To perform other related duties and assignments as required


  • General knowledge and understanding of sheltering practices preferred
  • Prior shelter or veterinarian practice experience preferred
  • Minimum high school diploma; some college education preferred
  • Able to walk or stand on your feet throughout a normal work day
  • Able to lift 50 pounds regularly throughout a normal work day
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals
  • Good interpersonal, communication, customer service and time management skills
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment
  • Contribute to effective teamwork and foster public relations beneficial to the shelter and its programs
  • Ability and initiative, working with minimal supervision and direction
  • Ability to identify problems or patient conditions (medical or behavioral) that need to be brought to the attention of the immediate supervisor.
Job Title: Customer Service Associate
Classification: Full-time, Non-exempt
Reports to: Director of Shelter Operations

Primary Function:
Provide excellent customer service. Greet and assist customers. Answer phones. Process adoptions. Promote retail sales and handle when volunteers are unavailable. Promote other requested marketing initiatives. Invite all guests to make a donation.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Greet customers, request that they sign in and escort, or direct, them through the facility
  • Process adoption request with final approval of Management
  • Utilize Pet Point program for all animal data
  • Keep the front desk clean and organized
  • Maintain lost/found list
  • Maintain the Food Bank Program
  • Assist with cleaning the facility prior to opening hours
  • Answer the phones promptly, retrieve messages often, and direct calls appropriately
  • Accept in-kind donations on a daily basis and politely decline items we cannot use
  • Complete and update animal profiles in Pet Point for incoming and existing animals
  • Review, approve, hold, or deny adopters’ questionnaires
  • Promote sales of retail items during the adoption process, working with retail volunteers, and assist customers with retail items when necessary
  • Market any initiatives requested by the Marketing Department
  • Process the End of Day report
  • Other duties as assigned


  • College education preferred
  • General knowledge and understanding of sheltering practices
  • Prior customer service experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication skills
  • Basic computer and data entry skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment with a diverse group of people
  • Able to maintain a positive attitude at all times

Task List: Daily

  • Assist with cleaning the facility prior to opening
  • Speak with potential adopters and answer any questions. Review Adoption Questionnaires and process adoptions.
  • Process incoming and outgoing in-kind donations including logging food items in the “Food Bank Log.” Place all donation items in their proper place in the shelter.
  • Greet every customer as they walk in. Request that they sign into our guest book and answer any questions they may have.
  • Attend to phone calls and emails as needed
  • Maintain the lost and found list as emailed reports or phone calls come in
  • Complete or update Animal Profiles as new animals enter the shelter
  • Promote the sales of retail items during the time of adoption and to customers who are not interested in adopting
  • Process the “End of Day” report and give to the Business Manager

  • Log the total amount of food donated and given out per month and enter into excel spreadsheet
