Surrendering a Pet

Surrendering your pet(s) can be a difficult and heartbreaking experience.  We at Pet Helpers, want to facilitate a responsible transition from your home to the shelter, to ensure your pet’s success at finding a new home.

Pet Helpers keeps all pets until they are adopted, therefore space is limited, and unfortunately we cannot accept all of the applications we receive. Our shelter strives to provide resources to help keep animals in their loving homes, and we encourage owners to explore alternative options before surrendering a pet.

Each animal will require a scheduled assessment by our intake team Animals must pass a temperament test prior to an intake appointment being set. Pet Helpers strives to provide the highest level of care to all of our animals, and will work to make the transition from home to shelter life as smooth as possible. In addition to providing comprehensive medical care, our animals enjoy enrichment, play groups, and one-on-one time with shelter staff to ensure all of their needs are met until the most appropriate adoptive home is found.

Please email animalresource@pethelpers.org with detailed information about your pet, including age, sex, breed, spayed/neutered status, temperament (especially around other dogs), and the reason for rehoming. The more details you provide, the better we can assess your pet’s needs and guide you through the rehoming process.

Please note that our shelter can only accept animals when kennel space is available, so we cannot guarantee an owner surrender on your requested date. Our intake team will review your inquiry and contact you once your request has been processed. Please allow a few days for a response.

Thank you for reaching out and considering the best options for your pet!

If you find a stray animal, please call us at (843) 795-1110, and we’ll be happy to assist you with the next steps.

Rehome Your Pet Without Bringing Them to a Shelter

Sometimes life changes in ways we can’t predict — and that can mean having to make the difficult decision to find a new home for your beloved pet. If you need help rehoming your pet, our Courtesy Rehoming Program is here to support you.

By submitting your pet’s information through our easy online form, we’ll help you connect with potential adopters by featuring your pet on our website. This gives your pet a chance to go directly from one loving home to another — without ever entering the shelter system.

Unless you’re working with a reputable adoption organization, we strongly advise against giving your pets away for free. It’s important to ensure your pet is adopted by a responsible and trustworthy individual(s). Sadly, some pets are adopted under false pretenses, putting them at risk of dangerous situations.
