Job Title: Veterinarian

Job Summary:

Pet Helpers Spay/Neuter Clinic is currently searching for a part time or full time experienced veterinarian to join our veterinary team. The doctor will be partnering with our current full-time doctor to provide HVHQ spays and neuters for public and shelter animals (including community/feral cats), wellness care for shelter animals, low-cost vaccine clinics for community animals, developing and maintaining standard operation protocols, among many other various duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform spays and neuters in an efficient but careful manner (25+ surgeries per day)
  • Evaluate and appropriately treat all shelter animals’ medical needs in a timely manner
  • Participate in daily rounds with shelter staff to evaluate health/herd health of all animals
  • Devise plans for animals with more complicated needs/pediatric animals in foster
  • Provide and monitor vaccine administration during walk-in vaccine clinics
  • Ability to perform other surgical procedures: laceration repairs, hernia repairs, amputations, enucleations, cherry eye, etc.

Minimum Requirements:

  • DVM Licensure in the state of SC or the ability to quickly acquire one
  • Graduate from an accredited school of veterinary medicine
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience
  • Knowledge and desire to practice high quality shelter medicine
  • Experience with high quality high-volume surgical sterilization
  • Ability to multi-task, be flexible in a fast-paced environment, be compassionate in all circumstances, work well and efficiently both independently and with a team
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel
  • Capable of standing on feet majority of day
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted multiple times throughout day, sometimes 50+ with assistance

Job Title: Animal Care Technician
Classification: Non- exempt
Reports to: Shelter Manager
Resumes to:

Primary Function: To provide consistently compassionate, attentive and humane care of the animals. To clean and maintain a healthy, sanitary environment for the animals and the public. To help prepare animals for adoption by helping to socialize, train, and keep them medically healthy. To constantly help reduce the stress of shelter-life for the animals by providing plenty of exercise, enrichment, and quiet time. To meet and greet and educate customers and help them in the selection of a pet.

Duties and responsibilities: % of Time

  • To clean and sanitize all areas, including but not limited to, cages and kennels, floors, walls, crates, air vents, litter pans, filters, laundry, dishes, the kitchen, the yards, storage areas, windows, etc.
  • To conduct spot cleaning of animal and public areas throughout the day as needed
  • To feed, medicate and observe animals for illness or infestations
  • To inform the Director of Operations, Shelter Manager or Intake Manager of changes in any animal’s health or behavior at time noticed
  • To work with the animals to exercise, help socialize and train, per instructions
  • To assist the public with the selection of a companion animal, maintaining a friendly demeanor and providing excellent customer service at all times
  • To assist in the training of volunteers so that they meet our needs and we meet theirs
  • To work courteously and cooperatively with volunteers and all shelter personnel to achieve an efficient, healthy, safe and pleasant environment for the animals and the public
  • To assure that animals have proper identification displayed
  • To maintain the exercise logs at all times
  • To communicate maintenance needs to the Director of Operations
  • To maintain accurate records on all white boards and in Pet Point
  • To familiarize yourself with the Pet Helpers website and to be able to speak effectively to the principals, purposes and objectives of the organization

  • General knowledge and understanding of sheltering practices preferred
  • Prior shelter or veterinarian practice experience preferred
  • Minimum high school diploma; some college education preferred
  • Able to walk or stand on your feet throughout a normal work day
  • Able to lift 50 pounds regularly throughout a normal work day
  • Excellent customer service skills

Job Title: Volunteer Coordinator
Classification: Part time – 20 to 24 hours per week
Reports to: Executive Director

Primary Function: Responsible for recruiting, retaining and recognizing volunteers. Includes planning, coordinating and overseeing volunteer projects to assist in the delivery of Pet Helpers’ programs and services. Works closely with Marketing/PR, Development and Shelter Operations Departments to ensure a quality experience for volunteers while meeting the needs of Pet Helpers. Manage volunteer engagement in Pet Helpers’ hosted fundraising events.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Cultivates, recruits, places, tracks, trains and recognizes individual volunteers and groups of volunteers
  • Develops and implements goals, objectives, and procedures for the volunteer program
  • Works closely with other departments to plan and execute volunteer projects both onsite and offsite, ensuring that each project has the appropriate directions, number of volunteers, and materials needed
  • Implements a screening process for potential volunteers which assesses risk associated with each volunteer position and takes appropriate action to mitigate risk associated with the service
  • Develops and implements an intake and interview protocol for potential volunteers to ensure the best match between the skills, qualifications, and interests of the volunteer and the needs of the organization
  • Develops and administers forms and records to document volunteer activities through the use of Volgistics data system
  • Conducts ongoing evaluation of the programs and services delivered by volunteers and implements improvements as necessary
  • Designs and implements an orientation program that engages individuals and groups of volunteers
  • Provides training to volunteers and staff who oversee volunteers
  • Produces monthly reports for the Executive Director’s report to the Board
  • Recruit, manage and train volunteers for participation for Pet Helpers’ hosted fundraising events throughout the year.
  • Participate in the planning for the major fundraising event in the fall (currently Fur Ball) as well as managing the volunteer participation in the event.

  • Experience in volunteer management required

  • Knowledge of processes and best practices for providing customer service, evaluation of volunteer satisfaction, and project needs assessment
  • Ability to handle multiple projects under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and handle animals
